11 BDSM Dungeon Accessories and Decoration Ideas

Maybe you have a new BDSM space. Perhaps you want to give an existing one a facelift? Either way, making your kink space something that reflects you as a Dom (or even a sub) isn’t always a cheap or simple thing.

However, one of the simplest ways is through the accessories you add.  These ideas should help you or inspire you to other avenues.

Enjoy!

DECIDE ON YOUR STYLE

Before you jump to the little additions, you’ll need to figure out what style/theme you want for your kink space. Next is painting, wallpapering, flooring etc. After, it’s deciding on the larger pieces of furniture or playthings. THEN you can accessorize.

How much of a sprinkling is up to you. If you’re going minimalist, you’ll have next to nothing in the way of accessories. If you want it brimming, just make sure that they don’t overpower your focal points or clutter the room.

REMEMBER: The more you have, there more there is to dust and clean.

SAFETY FIRST

  • If you plan on having candles or engaging in wax play, make sure all flammable materials are well out of reach. Or, keep open flames in a contained holder. You can also opt for fake candles too if you’re worried.
  • Don’t forget that when your flogger is flying, or your sub is flailing around, that they can’t knock over or damage any of your possessions (including the sub). This is especially important for glass objects.

1. CHANGE THE HARDWARE

Even something as simple as switching out the knobs and latches on furniture can give it more of a BDSM theme (or whatever theme you’re going for).

Make sure that you have all the furniture pieces you want (and know exactly what you need and the corresponding measurements) before you hit the hardware store.

I’ve seen flowers, skulls, bats, leather knobs, you name it.

2. SHOW OFF YOUR TREASURES

Your toys and torture devices can double as decorations. Affix hooks along a wall and hang your floggers, cuffs, and restraints etc. from them. Also, an open bookcase or shelf can hold shoes, masks, jewelry etc. If you have a bit of extra scratch, mannequins or simple hangers can put your outfits on display.

NOTE: Some setups like a “medical scenario” end up having the play objects themselves a perfect thing to show off and fill your space.

3. LAMP SHADES

There are plenty of cheap lamp shades and lighting accessories that will give your dungeon a lift. Remember one of the main rules of decorations – ONE showpiece. This means that you can go for ONE eye-popping light, but the rest should match without being too loud.

4. DOLLAR/THRIFT STORE GLASSWARE

Walk into any thrift store and you’ll find a mountain of candle holders, bottles, vases, serving trays, knickknacks, and other dodads. They’ll also be cheap.

5. BE FABRIC CREATIVE

Sometimes people rent. Sometimes they don’t have much money. One way to add lavish and love to your kink space is by adding fabrics.

They can drape over furniture, hang over lights, grace your windows, make focus points on walls, and the list goes on. Thrift store, discount bins at your local fabric store or even black contractor’s plastic will do in a pinch.

6. MIRROR

Aside from looking pretty, you and your sub can see all sort of other angles. You don’t have to spend hundreds on something that looks like it came from Pottery Barn or Pier One. Instead, hit up yard sales or even new options that just need some paint. IKEA might have something good in their sale area. You can also just go for the glass part and make your own frame (which is especially good if you want to save money on a full-length mirror.

7. ART PIECES

Personally, I hate when I see paintings in BDSM dungeons – mostly because art is very personal and what makes one person smile might make another cringe. What you CAN do, is find or make BDSM themed focal points – signs that say “Yes Mistress”, BDSM quotes painted on the wall, a framed list of rules.

8. BASKETS, BOXES, TRUNKS, AND CAGES

Big or small, these containers will give you tons of accessory options (not to mention storage). Amazon will have some cheap choices, but so will the other fallbacks of thrift stores and yard sales. You might even be lucky enough to find a perfectly good trunk abandoned on the road.

9. A SHOW-STOPPING HEADBOARD

If you’ve opted to but a bed in your dungeon, having a beautiful headboard or bed frame is a must-have. You can either spend big bucks to buy one (which is okay) or you can DIY it (which is also okay). You’ll find plenty of online tutorials to teach you how.

10. PLANTS … CHOSEN WISELY

Greenery makes ANY space look good, and there are enough species to fit any theme you can imagine. If you’re lucky enough to have a space with natural light, you’re good to go. However, if you have no windows, you’re going to be restricted to plants that can thrive with no sunlight (you can Google it).

What I will strongly recommend staying away from are silk flowers. Sorry, I know I’m going to step on plenty of toes, but fake flowers 90% of the time look SO tacky. The other 10% requires buying the WAY more expensive ones. Also, cheap or expensive doesn’t matter … if you don’t dust them, they’ll look terrible.

Best to stay with real green.

11. OBJECTS YOU MIGHT OVERLOOK

I saw one image of someone’s “opium den”. They had Asian umbrellas hanging from the ceiling to disperse light, brass-looking antiques, incense holders, velvet pillows etc. It was gorgeous. Another was more of a high-class or noble living room – tea tray, percaline vases, ornate cigarette box, silver picture frames. How about playing in a lush, green utopia … where all the plants can be used for submissive torture.

The point is, ANYTHING can be a BDSM dungeon accessory. Just have a concrete idea as to your theme but an open mind when you go shopping.

Unless you’re dripping with cash, getting to a “complete product” will take a while. Keep images handy on your phone, even a list of what you specifically want, and cross it off the list as you buy it. Also, don’t feel like you have to rush it. Enjoy the process of building your fetish refuge.

RESOURCE REMINDER – IKEA discount area, thrift stores, hardware stores, yard sales, boot sales (England), friends who are remodeling or getting rid of stuff, basements, attics, Amazon, fabric store discounts, Wal-Mart discounts, estate auctions, pet stores, medical supply stores, pharmacies (if you’re doing medical fetish stuff).
